Dredging between Terneuzen and Gent

The Mahury dredging in Terneuzen, 1 May 2025

The Canal Gent - Terneuzen runs from the lock complex in Terneuzen to Langerbrugge just north of Gent.
The canal constitutes the maritime access to the port facilities of North Sea Port, the Dutch-Belgian port authority that was formed in 2018 with the merge of Zeeland Sea Ports and the Port Authority of Gent.

Recently the access to the canal from the Western Scheldt has significantly been improved with the construction of a new and large lock chamber, which with a length of 427 meter is not only the largest one of the lock complex in Terneuzen, but also belongs to the family of the largest locks in the world, such as the ones in IJmuiden, Antwerp and Panama.

As of 8 May 2025, the new lock received its first visiting ships as part of a trial program to test its functionality.
Prior to this trial program, some final work had to be carried out, amongst other removing a layer of sediment that had built up during the period that the lock was not yet in use.
Dredging in a lock is not a daily business, but it has successfully been carried out with great precision by the 1,859 m3 trailing suction hopper dredger Mahury in just a few days.

Also recently, it has been announced that Jan De Nul has been awarded a renewal of the contract for the maintenance dredging of the Flemish part of the canal, which runs from Zelzate to Langerbrugge.
This contract is now valid until May 2026, but has options to be extended again.
